It’s a common thing to see various rookies debuting each year in
K-Pop music industry. 2015 is no exception with rookies like GFriend, Seventeen, iKON, and Oh My Girl started to gain more
attention. Actually, I’m not really paying attention to rookies this year because
there are so many of them; it’s quite hard to catch up L
But then, comes TWICE,
a new girl group from JYP Entertainment,
that gets my interest right away. JYP Entertainment is my favorite
entertainment agency among others, so it makes me curious to see what kind of
group that they will produce next. Beside that, it is one of the Big 3, which
means that they must prepare something special and different among other
agencies.
JYP Entertainment seems to load a big gun for TWICE. The girls
were introduced through a survival show called Sixteen. Just like its title, this survival shows was about sixteen
girls who competed to become a part of JYP next girl group. It’s full of challenge
and only nine girls could make it to the end. Although I didn’t watch the
survival show, the high media exposure of Sixteen enough to rise up my
interest. Last, here come teasers prior to their debut, which made me curious
because it’s scary, but hilarious at the same time.
TWICE debut is finally coming on October 19 with album called The Story Begins and Like Ooh Ahh as their lead single. Do
they fulfill the expectation? Just see my review below………………
One thing that crossed my mind when I first listen to Like Ooh Ahh is it’s a fun song. The
song has several combinations of various sounds from flute (which is unique
because K-Pop songs rarely used this), clapping sound, drum, and synthesizer. It
emphasizes the fun aspect of this song since each part has own different sound.
It also doesn’t sound messy because there is certain beat that stays throughout
the song. It connects all the elements and makes it still sound like a whole
complete song.
The fun aspect can also be seen on the way TWICE sing the song. Each
verse goes like a conversation where the girls talk about how good they are,
but they’re still longing for someone who loves them the way they are. It works
well for TWICE because they are a big group with nine members. When they sing
and banter between each other, it’s kind of like girls’ conversation. I love
how they put enough sass and playful attitude on their vocal, which represents
the song lyrics. My only concern would be they do not have a stand out
vocalists or rappers even if most of them can sing decently.
Meanwhile, the music video does a good job in introducing the
girls. Most of the scenes mainly use one take camera technique with close up to
each girl face. Surprisingly as rookies, the girls does not look awkward in
front of camera; in fact, they work it. Each girl captivates our attention
through their charm. It seems the survival show helped them a lot to get used
to the camera.
This also added by the styling for the girls. Each of them has
different styling from their hair, makeup to clothes, so it makes us easier to
know them one by one. The styling fits them too with domination of bright
colors and street style that represents the youthful vibe of the girls. Although
they have different styling, they still have coordinated theme such as army
clothes, which make us aware that they belong to one group.
The unique thing about the music video would be the storyline. The
music video showed how zombies surround the girls since they wake up in the
morning to the gym, even to school corridor. However, the girls do not mind
that and at the end, they finally dance together with the zombies on a large
field. If you look at it, it feels like the storyline of the music video
actually related with the lyrics.
The lyrics are about the girls who always become a center of
attention, but truthfully, they still longing for a boy who love them
sincerely. The music video shows the opposite. It’s the zombies who are longing
for love since they often associated as emotionless. In the music video, they
just run around not knowing what to do. Then, the girls come and give love to
the zombie. In the music video, the bright aspect is only TWICE from their
clothes to makeup along among the old and gloomy setting. It’s like only TWICE
who is shining and lifting up people’s spirit. Finally at the end, zombies feel
loved that’s why they get their heart back and turn into human. It’s an interesting
storyline and it relates with the whole youthful and fun concept of TWICE.
TWICE is a fresh debut from girl group. The song is fun and
energetic, so is the music video. The best thing about them is how each member able
to shine on their own, but still work together as a team. Each girl has different
charm and likeable enough to attract people’s attention. However when we see
them together, they work as a group and no one overshadows others. I think this
point makes them stand out among other rookies who are either too similar
between each other or too many who want to shine as individual instead of team.
Promising debut from JYP Entertainment and they still have enough rooms to
grow. Definitely will look at them again not only twice, but third fourth and other
next times!
